Digging Deep in Israel–Next Stop: Mount Arbel

Visiting Mount Arbel includes a look at the ruins of an ancient Jewish Synagogue. There are four Jewish villages on the mountain. But the most spectacular thing about the mountain is not what you see there, but what you see from there. The mountain has a beautiful view of Tiberius and of the Sea of Tiberius (also called the Sea of Galilee), where my Lord carried out the ministry that would change the world and would rescue you and me from Hell. Mount Arbel is one spot that offers a panoramic view of the place of my Lord’s work on earth.

As my friend, Carla Moore, wrote in her article for Christian Woman magazine entitled He is Still Here:

Standing atop Mount Arbel and viewing the Sea and the surrounding countryside below, where Jesus once walked, lived, loved, laughed, rescued, healed, touched and blessed countless lives, we are awed by His mighty power and humbled by His perfect perspective. “Take heart. It is I. DO not be afraid.” We can still take heart, knowing He is here.

Just to think about the Lord having formed this mountain peak and then humbling himself to to view it from the very small perspective of one of thousands of men who would look to its pinnacle, stirs my soul.

In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him (Psalm 95:4).

Digging Deep Israel ’22…A Happening Thing!

Digging Deep Israel ’22 is a plan! And Rome, Italy (the site of much Pauline work and writing) is a two-day bonus on the end of our trip this time! As you know, the vaccine requirement has been lifted. We expect that even the Covid testing requirement prior to entering Israel and Italy will likely also be discontinued by October. If the Lord is willing, we are going to walk the passages of the Old and New Testament events in early November of 2022!

If you were along in 2019, you know this was the trip of a lifetime! Any time you are looking at the actual synagogue ruins, the temple mound, the gate through which Abraham almost certainly walked, the garden where Jesus prayed, etc…you will be moved and strengthened. But to do it with Christians while stopping all along the way to sing His praises and bow with faithful believers is, in my estimation, one of the closest things you’ll do in this lifetime to heaven itself.

Some of you have made your reservations, already. Registration is NOW open for all members of the kingdom of Christ. But, if you are a present or past Digger and you want to go, hurry up and register! We will have daily Digging Deep study sessions from various locations and we will also plan to air our October podcast (early in November) from a relevant location in Israel. More details to be announced later about this!

My husband is the kind of husband who is very careful about expenditures for travel (in a good way!). He knows, that unlike many purchases we make, the “thing” we are buying cannot be later used for selling, trading, or bartering. Travel is a commodity that cannot be termed a “financial investment”, because you go on the trip and that expenditure has been permanently made. There is no cash return on the money you spent on travel. But my husband went to Israel with me in 2019 (or I went with him), and his words now are words like these and more:

“It was far better than I even imagined. Everyone who can go, should go at least once in this lifetime. There is no way you can describe it; you just have to experience it. I am sure it would be a great thing to be on the steps of the temple in any event, but to sit on those steps, where Peter almost certainly preached the first gospel sermon, and to sing about the kingdom and pray to the Father who sent His Holy Spirit there in that powerful way…to do that with New Testament Christians who all love Him like you do, is something that you will never forget.”

I cannot say enough about John and Carla Moore and Bible Land Passages. They are amazing. John has studied Jewish history while living among its ruins. He digs deep in Israel, in a literal way, alongside the top archaeologists of that area in our day. To say going to Israel with him is an amazing opportunity, is understating the obvious. We’re humbled by the very opportunity God has given us. Commercialization of the sites and artifacts is not what this trip is about. History is not revised in this presentation of the Bible Lands. It is examined through the lens of the sacred writings and what you will see will make you love the Bible and cling to its truths for your eternal security. The immunization requirement for Covid having been lifted, this trip will help immunize your soul against spiritual disease. It’s that good!

So here’s the “click” to the relevant information. Space is limited, so register now. I will see you in Newark, NJ on October 31st!

Digging Deep in Israel–Next Stop: Magdala

I’ve been postponing giving the details and plans for our November ’22 trip to Israel because of the strict Covid requirements for travelers as they enter the country of Israel. I’d like to postpone for just a few more days, as rumor has it (and it is just rumor, right now) that the vaccination requirements may be lifted in the very near future. I want to ask you to pray that, as decisions are made about November, His providence will be on every plan and purpose. I will let you know as soon as possible. I’m committed to going this year IF the vaccine/quarantine restrictions are lifted. If it seems that the virus restrictions will impose on our time there, we will immediately plan our trip for sometime in mid to late 2023. We will give details about the deposits of those who have already paid being refunded or re-applied at the time of our final announcement.

The flooring Mosaic at the synagogue of Magdala

For today, I want to think about the synagogue that we saw in 2019 in the city of Magdala. I remember being amazed at the blessing of our DD trip being in the year 2019, just six years after the excavation of the synagogue of Magdala was completed. So many people I love have paid dearly to travel to Israel in past decades and they could not even visit several of the places to which we were privileged to go. God’s secrets of Biblical authenticity have been “buried treasures” hidden beneath the surface of the dust from which he made man, the dust He can cleave to swallow those who show Him contempt (Numbers 16), the dust in which the Son of God scribbled (John 8) and under which His body was temporarily placed. Buried beneath the surface of His dust, mere men can dig still today and unearth entire villages that have not been seen for hundreds of years. It’s still happening in Israel today! Faith is strengthened by the moving of God’s dust.

The excavation occurred only 8-12 years ago. The Migdal synagogue in Magdala is the oldest synagogue in the Galilee region, dating all the way back to the Second Temple Period. (The second temple was constructed during the days of Zechariah, Haggai and Malachi and was the temple in and around which Jesus and the apostles taught and worked many wonders.)  Of course, the synagogue in Magdala was operative in the days of the Messiah and likely was visited by Mary Magdalene, as it was located in her hometown.

Did Jesus visit the synagogue at Magdala? Did he walk on the flooring pictured above?  It seems likely to me, since Magdala was located on the path that Christ likely took between his hometown of Nazareth and the area of Capernaum, in which he did most of his teaching and performed many miracles.

Perhaps Jesus saw the amazing Magdala stone which has the seven-branched candlestick (Exodus 25:31-37) carved clearly on its face–the oldest drawing of the Menorah outside of Jerusalem. I would be surprised if He did not see it.  Sitting there in Magdala and looking down on the synagogue that stood well before and throughout the days of our Lord, I could not help but be moved by the “largeness” of our God who continues to shout from Israel the authenticity of the work of His Spirit.

Digging Deep Israel–Next stop: Warning at the Cave of Pan

As we begin to prepare for our November ’22 Digging Deep Israel tour, I want to continue, occasionally, to revisit stops on our last tour. You can see the details for registering for the trip here: https://thecolleyhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/2022-Digging-Deep-Bible-Land-Passages-Tour-Brochure-Israel-and-Rome.pdf

Today’s stop: The Grotto of Pan

Sadly, in our world today, it’s becoming increasingly popular for middle-school children to identify themselves as being pansexual. They explain this by saying, “I’m sexually attracted to any and all. There are no limits to my desire to experience sexuality with any partner of any gender.” Pan, today, means all or whole. (Think pandemic, panacea, pandemonium, panic.)

Rolling Stone defines pansexuality this way: someone who is attracted – either emotionally, physically or both – to all genders. This includes cisgender, transgender, agender and gender nonconforming individuals. The prefix was chosen because it comes from the Greek root “pan,” meaning “all.” (rollingstone.com).

The Grotto of Pan can, at least in philosophical terms, be considered an ancient point of “anything goes” sexuality. The cave’s waters fed the Jordan and were so plentiful that the center of the cave was considered a bottomless pit into which the Greeks would throw their sacrifices to this half-man-half-goat god. If the sacrifices disappeared in the water, then they were thought to be accepted by the god. If they failed to disappear, the worship was rejected by the goat-god Pan. Nudity, sexual orgies and carnal freedom were all centerpieces of the worship of Pan. Thus, his connection to modern pansexuality in America.

I want to pause here for a parent parenthesis: Parents should notice, in this context, to whom our children are looking as role models, heroes and heroines in the culture wars of 2021. Miley Cyrus, Jazz Jennings, Kesha, Joe Lycett and many other celebrities who are touted in magazines and websites that attract teens (…like Teen Vogue…Never let your teens near Teen Vogue) are very vocal about the joys and beauty of pansexuality. Their message is being heard in Huntsville, Alabama and it’s likely being “followed” on Instagram by teens that you know.

Peering into the Cave of Pan at Caesarea-Philippi (more on Caesarea next time) was stirring. It was known as the pagan gate of Hades—the doorway to the underworld. When people move from devotion to Jehovah to idol worship of any kind, they pass through a foreboding gate to an encompassing and destructive chasm from which it is very difficult to return.

Artist’s Rendering of Pan

As I listened just yesterday to a friend relate the stories of three children in my geographical area who have embraced for themselves the name “pansexual,” I thought of this grotto in Caesarea. This morning I am spending a few minutes in prayer for my grandchildren who will pass by the metaphorical door of the Cave of Pan as they grow up in a world in which exposure to the holiness, beauty and blessings of the great I AM, for the super-majority of youth in America, has been replaced by exposure to the underworld—to icons of carnality, destined to rob them of happiness and eternity with God.  May my grandchildren see clearly the eternal tragedy of throwing offerings into this world’s deep and unholy chasm of self-destruction.

Israel ’22!

On the Sea of Galilee with Kate. It was a memorable trip, to say the least,  for these sisters.

The Digging Deep Israel/Rome trip is being planned as we speak. I’m excited to tell you that, Lord willing, the travel will occur during the first two weeks of November of 2022. This should be a more pleasant time of year for temperatures than our last unseasonably hot trip in May of 2019. We will likely be leaving from Nashville, Tennessee and then have ten days in the Bible lands. I’m very excited to spend a bit of our time in Rome, Italy to see the city of Paul’s imprisonment, later evangelism and subsequent death for Christ. We will get to see some of the amazing places where our Lord walked and worked in Judea. The latter may be the part about which I am most excited because the first trip in 2019 just made my cup (for appreciation of Israel) larger than it was before ever going there at all. There are so many sites I want to see again and view with more discerning and introspective eyes. I am very thankful we did not plan this trip for 2021 (as we initially had thought about doing). I trust and pray that by the end of 2022, we will think about Covid as a somewhat distant memory. God is a great provider!

Ruins of Chorazin, where our Lord did many “mighty works”…

The cost of the trip, though not completely finalized, as it is too early to book flights, will be likely be approximately $5000.00 per person. Digging Deep participants (of any years, past or present) and spouses will be the first to be able to sign up for the trip at any point during the year 2021. You will reserve your spot by paying a deposit to Bible Land passages (more details soon). Then, in January of 2022, the trip will opened up to those Christians who are not Digging Deep participants. So be thinking and talking at your dinner table and making your plans. We will, once again, be having Digging Deep studies for women in many very relevant geographical  spots and there will be times of worship for the entire group.

Bus bonding!

I cannot tell you how vast the chasm is between taking this trip with non-Christians and experiencing it with the Lord’s people. I do not ever want to make this pilgrimage with people who do not love and live the Word. Our fellowship, in 2019, was close, warm and wonderful. Our singing was beautiful and the prayers were fervent. None of us will ever be quite the same after being together for ten memorable days. We had Christians from all areas of the US, and  from New Zealand and Australia. I know this trip will not be an exact replication, but the Lord’s people will make it a little foyer of heaven, itself. I can’t wait!

Between now and then, I’ll be writing more little verbal glimpses of some of the spots we’ll see in this blog. You may want to visit http://biblelandpassages.org, as well. Many thanks to John and Carla Moore for their enthusiasm about our return trip and their patience with our group as we try to plan travel in an uncertain and chaotic time. We are so blessed.

4000-year-old “Abraham’s Gate”… I could not believe I was looking at a place where he walked when he went to rescue Lot!

Be praying. Be planning. Be saving. Be prepared for a trip that impacts your faith and future for Him!

Digging Deep…We Found 24 Charms/Pendants!

We’ve located 24 of these sweet little Digging Deep shovels! They are sterling silver and they are precious little keepsakes. Designed especially for Digging Deep by our good friends at Dempsey’s Jewelers in Johnson City, Tennessee, they bear the words “Digging Deep.”  Mine’s on a bracelet, but lots of sisters have them on little silver chains around their necks. They come with the sturdy little ring for easy attaching and in the pretty little gift box for easy gift-giving ( in case you know a digger who could use some sweet encouragement). We rarely find extra Digging Deep paraphernalia, but I wanted to throw this little find out there and sweep clean the DD shelves once again. You can order the little charms here: https://thecolleyhouse.org/store?fbclid=IwAR1nJ3ujNB9-_L5cmy9Vn_llR4zZOFy7h4z0FR9PR-chaI04J63ClnnDib4#!/Sterling-Silver-Digging-Deep-Pendant/p/99264175/category=0

We do have plenty of books if you know someone who’d like to study! It’s not too late to catch up quickly.

Almost every single order now has been shipped and so, if you are waiting, then it should not be much longer. You are the most encouraging group of ladies I have ever encountered. Thanks for being so forgiving and so patient!

The Israel trip for 2022 is in the works. I met a relatively new digger just yesterday who said “Sign me and my husband up!” Final dates and pricing are not quite ready, but I will let you know as soon as I can. This is so exciting. At present, we are looking at traveling to see where Paul worked and suffered in Rome and then to do a faith-building tour of Israel with lots of new sites to experience. So many amazing Biblical finds are being unearthed in that wonderful part of the world even as I write! It’s so amazing and yet concretely certain that every new find of those diggers (that has to do with Biblical history) is confirming of the authenticity of the God-breathed Word that these diggers (you and me) are searching!

Don’t forget the first video podcast is on the 29th at 7 CST. (I heard there may be some other competing discussion on television that night, so make a wise choice.=)) Seriously,  I do hope you’ll log in with us live  and comment.  You can watch the other guys later! All questions are welcomed, too! I can’t wait! Megan Learned, one of the most encouraging sisters in the whole world, is joining me. Find us here next Tuesday night!
