There are over 300 Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. Someone posted the results of a study on our Digging Deep Facebook Group that indicated that the odds of one man fulfilling, by chance and accurately, only a chosen eight of those prophecies is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000! Here’s Julie’s note about that:
Years ago, there was a professor named Peter Stoner. He was a mathematician and great with statistics. He began studying the Messianic prophecies and determined the odds of Jesus being born in Bethlehem were 1 in 280,000. Then he calculated the odds of Christ fulfilling 8 prophecies (yes, that’s correct – ONLY 8 prophecies) and it came to 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000! We can’t even comprehend that number! But this is a visual for you to help understand how HUGE that number is. Imagine covering the entire state of Texas two feet deep with silver dollars. On 1 of those silver dollars, you place an ‘X’. Then, you blindfold someone, spin them around for awhile, and let them loose in the state of Texas and tell them to pick 1 coin. The odds that the individual will pick the coin with the ‘X’ is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000!!! And remember, that’s the probability of Jesus fulfilling only 8! (Thanks Julie Orr! You can read about this study at http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/radio034.htm.)
The point is this: There’s not a chance in the whole wide world that a man could have fulfilled those 300 prophecies. But God could and He did. Here are a few more of those prophecies and their New Testament fulfillments. Thanks to Genevieve Ormon for her work on this chart!
Now, the February study is a great place for you to jump in if you are new to the Digging Deep study. The ground we’re plowing this month (the book of John and comparisons with parables in other gospels) is pretty tender and very fertile. You will grow. I’m excited about this month’s digging. God bless every woman in the Word this month!
