It’s summertime! It’s almost officially summertime, anyway, and the unofficial Memorial Day weekend summer kick-off has already brought the grills out, taken the pool covers off and taken lots of the clothes off, too. (But that’s for another blog post!)
I’ve made some plans to try and stay healthy this summer. I’m going low on carbs and sugar and high on vegetables and fruit. That’s a big sacrifice for me. I love the all the CHs!…chocolate, cheesecake, and chips with salsa. Of course I love all the FRs, too–french fries, frappes, and Frozen yogurt and I love all the rest of the digraphs (loaded). But I am really going to try–hard!
I also plan to walk, fast, at least a couple of miles three times a week. Whenever the weather is bad and I use the treadmill, I also have a rowing machine that I hate using, but I do use it. And one of my doctors has prescribed a summer schedule of water aerobics, so I will let you know how that goes. My friend, Holly, tells me I will love it. Needless to say, the instructors are going to marvel at my “swimsuit”.
Maybe you are focusing on academic fitness for your kids. I know some kids who have a reading list for the summer to keep their skills sharp through the weeks out of school. I used to make my kids do a timed math program called “Mad Minutes” each day during the summer so they wouldn’t forget what they’d learned through the year. There was a reason they weren’t called “glad minutes”, but they did help lots with retention. (Fitness and fun are not synonyms. Have you noticed?) And even this summer, our son is immersing himself into some Medieval philosopher named Maroni for the purpose of becoming more “fit” to defend his dissertation. (Like I said about fitness and fun…)
Of course, the most important fitness is spiritual fitness. This summer I plan to do at least six spiritual core fitness programs. I hope by the end of summer to be a little stronger in my resistance to the devil (James 4:7), to have laid aside some of the weights of sin that so easily beset me (Heb.12:1), to be able to lift a little more of the burdens of others (Gal.6:2—that’s a Hannah’s Hundred verse!), and to be prepared to run the spiritual marathon that leads to the prize of the high calling (Phil. 3:14).
SO…SPIRITUAL FITNESS PROGRAM NUMBER 1:
Hannah’s Hundred
Several homeschooling moms have asked me lately about these memory CDs and which verses from scriptures they include. (I think some of these moms are planning to substitute Hannah’s Hundred for some part of a Charlotte Mason program they are using.) At any rate, the request for a verse list got me reminiscing about the days in our home when the kids were small and we were struggling to find ways to put the Word in their hearts. Hannah’s Hundred, volumes 1-4, were the result of our discovery that kids (and adults) could learn long and difficult passages or large numbers of simple verses if we could just set them to music. There are 400 verses that immediately perk our ears when we hear them quoted from the pulpit or in Bible studies. Little tunes pop into our minds when we hear them. They will forever be verses with which we are most familiar from the Word. They’re in permanent folders somewhere in the filing cabinets of our minds and when Marge (she’s the lady in our minds who runs around finding the info that we need from memory files) is called upon to locate these verses, she just starts humming and then she can easily pull up these files.
I plan to put these verses on our CD player once again this summer. I think they will get us thinking on the Word and I think that has to be good for spiritual fitness.
So here’s a sample of the Hannah’s Hundred series, if you are interested. They’re available at www.thecolleyhouse.org. And for those of you moms who have asked for a listing of the verses, scroll down for that, too!

HANNAH’S HUNDRED II
1. John 14:15 — “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
2-14. I Corinthians 13: 1-13 — “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Love suffereth long, and is kind; Love envieth not; Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love never fails; but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
