Sister to Sister: Links You’ll Like

BYHBbuttonAt the top of the blog this week, I’m hoping you’ll be praying for the Tavaro Hanna family as they are making plans to come from the Bahamas to attend preaching school at Memphis School of Preaching. I posted on Facebook yesterday about this family, but since I’m just one of your hundreds–even thousands–of Facebook friends, here’s how you can know more about them and help spread the gospel though them. Here’s the Facebook message.

Can you share?… Either the post or the funds? If you want to do something really great for a needy family this year for the holidays, I know a family who already has visas and tickets booked to come to preaching school from the Bahamas. Their goal is to go right back after training and spread the Word in those islands. If you or your congregation could help, here’s the info. I’d just hate to see them have to turn back now because they could not raise the support. (It’s hard to raise support when you’re in a place where there are very, very few Christians.) They are registered for school in January, so we have to hurry! Share. Ask your elders. Pray….And thanks! Here you go. http://www.hannaheartfarm.com

We are nearing the end of the second month of this year’s Digging Deep study. I confess to you that I am not at my optimal point of study for this month, but I am determined to catch up.  I like that about the Digging Deep study….We don’t all have to be on the same chapter at the exact same time. Having said that, though, several of you have asked for organizational ideas for  your local groups . I want to share with you one group’s plan for the month of October. This bunch of sweet women is a group of babes in Christ, so it may be more organization than needed for those who are more mature and habitual in their studies. But what a great start for these brand new Christians!… Click here to view:  October Job Study
Don’t forget the Digging Deep podcast is just 8 days away. You can find that here next Tuesday night (the 27th) at 7 CST. (http://livestream.com/whcoc/for-women).

Next, if you haven’t already checked out The Light Network, I want to recommend what I believe to be a great and practical resource for Christian growth and evangelism.   You can check it out here: http://thelightnetwork.tv. I’m excited to talk with Emily Hatfield, of TLN, on an upcoming edition of Wifey Wednesday about “The Empty Nest”. It will air on the 28th of  this month here: http://thelightnetwork.tv/tag/wifey.

And, finally, if you are anywhere near the Memphis, TN area this week, spend a day at The Spiritual Sword lectures. Looking at the list of speakers, I am very glad that’s where I’ll be this week! You can get the info you need about this great program here: http://spiritualsword.org/the-spiritual-sword-lectureship/.

Have a great week for Him!

Sister to Sister: Seminar! You’ve Been Waiting for This!

11222795_10153195680049069_178530950660725037_nYou don’t want to miss the “Living With Purpose” seminar scheduled for September 24th and 25th  at West Huntsville!  This event for women of God is full of strength and encouragement from the Word and it only happens every two years. So collect your car load or van load and go and register at seminar.westhuntsville.org. Hurry! There’s free housing in homes, hotel discounts and plenty of free food. (Someone I know and love is hoping to smoke us some delicious meat. And he IS a smoking phenomenon!) I’ve heard from women as far away as Louisville, Kentucky, the Kansas City, Missouri area, and  Gloucester, Virginia who have already registered. I’m so excited about this day. Serenity, if I am counting correctly, will have 13 overnighters that Friday night (and it will smell like “Dreamland BBQ” around here!

We will start on Friday night with our “Sweet Hour Of Prayer” I can’t wait for this time with you. It really does “call me from a world of care.” Bring your prayer requests and we will go before the throne. On Saturday, the lessons from Kathy Pollard will be meaty and practical. You will go home with an increased stamina for jumping over the hurdles that Satan is putting in your path. You’ll be a better wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and/or sister. Honing in on life’s purpose will have positive ramifications in every area of your life. The bonus part of the day will be a mini Bible marking class. I am all-in for that!

For those who register before the 11th of September, t-shirts will be available. The discounted hotel housing must also be reserved by that date. In-home housing is available up until seminar time, as long as it lasts.  Feel free to call 256-895-8717 (church office) if you have questions.

It’s been requested that we have Digging Deep shirts and tumblers there, too, so I will try to have a few of those in case you didn’t get yours at PTP or online. You can still order those at The Colley House store. The PTP special will expire on September 18th, so get your order in now!

This weekend, I’ll be in Bremen, Georgia at the Bremen church of Christ talking about “True Success.” I’m shooting for both practical and challenging, with a big shot of how to counter the culture in the hearts of the next generation. So, if you are in the area, come! I’ll be speaking three times at this event. The seminar in Bremen begins at 9 am EST on Saturday.

Then I will be back home on Sunday morning for the exciting kick-off to our Fall gospel meeting with BJ  Clarke. That will be at 9 am CST on Sunday. Following our worship and classes we will have the meal that will challenge your diet (but it will be worth it)  in our fellowship hall. That will be followed by an afternoon worship at about 1:15. We will have nightly services Monday through Wednesday at 7 pm. I heard BJ speak a few days ago to about 2000 people at the Polishing the Pulpit conference. It was over before I could fathom the time having passed! So rich. So important. I cannot wait to hear him again.  SO come!

Finally, it’s not too late to start the 2015-2016 dig into the Word with us. It’s a relevant and Biblical study that’ll get you ready to stand when the Word and your conviction in its truth is attacked. You WILL face ridicule if you faithfully live the godly life (II Tim. 3:12). the study is here: Persecution: For Righteousness’ Sake

Next time: “Sister to Sister: Another Chance” continues.

Sister to Sister: At Last! the West Huntsville Women’s Seminar 2015!

11222795_10153195680049069_178530950660725037_nIt’s finally time to register! (http://seminar.westhuntsville.org/)…for GREAT lessons about living with purpose that will get you back on track for Him and for your families. “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” the popular Friday night time of petitioning God together in behalf of the needs of those sisters in attendance and those we love, will, once again open our weekend with prayer and refreshing encouragement from sisters. Then, on Saturday, Kathy Pollard, of Denver, Colorado, will be taking us to the scriptures to give us just what we need to keep on keeping on as we close a year that has been one of the darkest years for morality in the history of our country. We NEED this weekend!

Kathy will also give us a crash course in Bible marking, for which I, personally, can hardly wait. There’s free Friday night housing in homes. There are snack times, there’s book-store perusal time, singing time and there’s encouragement coming from hundreds of smiles and praying hearts. We can do this thing of raising kids and grandkids in a culture gone awry! Kathy will be giving us ammunition for the fight that is ahead.

I truly hope you can come. Make it a sisters road trip. Make it a weekend and stay over for Sunday if you can. We’ll meet your flight and get you to your lodging. Bring your prayer requests for Friday night. Bring your Bibles for marking. Bring your daughters for the faith of your future grandchildren. Bring your sisters for growing closer. Bring your non-Christian friends for a glimpse of hope. Bring your appetites, your singing voices and your pajamas. This only happens every other year, so don’t miss it. If you come and you do not find strength for the journey, I personally will refund your registration fee!…

Okay, so it’s FREE. The seminar itself, the snacks , the lunch, the housing in homes…It’s all free of charge and waiting— for your spiritual advantage. So go here …http://seminar.westhuntsville.org/ …for answers to your questions, and to sign up. The T-shirt is the only thing you can buy on the whole page and it’s certainly optional and sold to you at cost for eight dollars.

Have I convinced you? So go sign up, already!

(ps….if you have questions, call or text Emily at 256-509-2541 or Holly at 256-322-7556)

Sister to Sister: Saved…for Something Pretty

10953186_871781946217219_3861938857966495909_nJust now, while writing the post below about the Biblical remnant, the sweetest thing happened. A precious friend from Honolulu, with whom I talked last week about spiritual things, texted me with some questions about baptism. After a few more minutes of study with her dear brother in Honolulu, she texted back and asked if we could face time tonight so I could be with her at her baptism. So tonight, just moments ago, I had the sweet privilege of being digitally present at Ala Moana Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, as my (now) sister, Ave, was baptized into Christ.
I have spoken with her enough to know that she is done with sin. I believe with all of my heart that she will serve King Jesus until the trumpet blows.10422087_10152553381271384_5156169545632711232_n It will be difficult for her. Not all of her family members are Christians. She has some friends who will ridicule her decision and her devotion. I want to ask you all to be in prayer this week for Ave. She is pure and clean and white and headed for heaven. I hope I can introduce many of you to her, if not in this life, when we all get to the best part of the Christian life! Ave, my sister, I am not sure I can sleep tonight; I am so excited about this– your life’s biggest decision. But you should sleep better than you ever have. I love you.

And now, about the remnant…

When I was a little girl, my mother often took me to the nearby TG&Y store where there was a nice fabric department. Sometimes we chose the material for my new dress from a big bolt. But we never did that first. First, we looked in the remnant bin. Remnants were little pieces of fabric, too small to stay on the bolt any longer, but often just right for a little girl’s dress or purse. They were rolled tightly and around each one was stapled a piece of paper describing the make-up of the particular piece (like 100% cotton or 50% cotton/50% polyester), the yardage in the remnant and the total price of the piece (always discounted from the regular selling price). I loved looking in that bin, because while I could not pick up a bolt, I could easily “handle” the remnants and choose for myself.

I love the fact that God has often called his chosen people, the “remnant”. In Ezra 9: 8, Ezra uses this descriptive term for the precious people who went back to Jerusalem from Persian captivity to rebuild the Temple. It’s a sweet, sweet passage. Here it is from both the ESV and the KJV, respectively:

But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant and to give us a secure hold within his holy place, that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery.

And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

Notice “grace has been shown,”…”a remnant has escaped”…we have “a secure hold in his  holy place”… He has “lightened our eyes” and “given us a reviving”.  Every single one of those descriptions are ours for the taking today as His remnant. We can be the little piece of the whole race for whom He died—the remnant that has escaped the wickedness of sin and gets a nail in His holy place. I want that secure hold. I want to be a part of the salvaged piece that God is using for His purposes.

Now notice Romans  9:27:

Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

This statement about Israel of old is in the middle of a discussion about how the Jews rejected Jesus and the system of grace, trying to be saved by the works of the old law. Obviously the passage is describing as the remnant the comparatively few Jews who accepted Christ as the Messiah. They were the remnant of the old nation of Israel.

God’s beloved remnant is mentioned some eight times in Isaiah and some 13 times in Jeremiah.*  Throughout scripture the remnant, when used in a positive way, is descriptive of the few who are rescued through faith and obedience from physical or spiritual bondage.

But thank God for Romans 11:5:

Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

That’s you and me. Paul, here speaks about the Gentiles and how that, through the fall of the Jews, salvation has come to this new remnant; the remnant that is no longer defined by the keeping of the works of the old law, but the remnant that encompasses all who obey through His grace. Paul even says in verse 14, that he would wish to provoke the Jews (his own flesh) to be “jealous” of the Gentiles who have obtained salvation, so that he “might save some of them.” Paul so wanted the Jews to accept Christ and be saved in the new remnant.

Praise God that I, though not a Jew, not a part of the chosen people of old, can claim my place in the remnant. I can have a secure hold in the holy place. Even though I should have been cast away, He salvaged me. Because I believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (9:33;10:9-11), I do not have to be ashamed.

Even in the figurative writings of Revelation (12:17, for instance), those who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” are described as the remnant. Praise Him that I’ve got that testimony. I am in that remnant.

I am glad that my mother let me choose from the remnants and then she made beautiful things from them. I am glad that, because of these little trips to TG&Y, I understand what a remnant is. I am more thankful that God still chooses the faithful remnant—a little part of those for whom He gave His Son; those who accept his gracious invitation—and that He makes something eternally beautiful from that remnant.

*The Remnant in Isaiah: 1:9; 10:20; 10:22; 11:11; 11:16; 37:4; 37:32; 46:3.

*The Remnant in Jeremiah: 6:9; 15:11; 23:3; 31:7; 39:9; 40:11; 40:15; 42:2; 42:19; 43:5; 44:12; 44:14; 44:28

Sister to Sister: Help One More Child and Get a Free DVD!

Unknown-3Sisters in the church have huge hearts! Really. They do. We all voted and shared and shared and shared for Addie Heltsley, our sweet friend with Cerebral Palsy and she, along with Elijah, won the representation of Liquid Hope as the poster children—the Children of Hope. There were women in the Bahamas, in Hawaii, in Australia and New Zealand…just women around the world who were watching the voting results and praying for Addie. See https://thecolleyhouse.org/sister-to-sister-guest-writer-sarah-heltsley-addies-mom for her mother’s heartfelt gratitude and voice of…well, it’s been overused, perhaps, but…hope. You can hear hope in her words.

And then, you amazing women started asking me “Isn’t there some way we could help the other children…the ones who didn’t win?” Of course. Some of you may have already done so, but if you would like to contribute to the nutrition of another child, simply go to this page: http://functionalformularies.com/about/child-of-hope-contest/#sthash.gfJ7sDJz.gVJq7kKf.dpbs, click on the child you would like to help and make the donation on that page. You can also donate to the general fund if you prefer. Some of the children have insurance that covers Liquid Hope, so you may want to read the stories before choosing.  As I understand it, when you donate, there’s a short form you fill out, so on that form, please put a notation that you are a member of the  church of Christ, so that, perhaps, in some time of need or crisis, the families to whom we donate will come looking for spiritual answers. All families will be notified of the source of each donation. For every one of you who donates $25.00 or more, Glenn and I would like to send a free DVD  from https://www.thecolleyhouse.org. We will even pay the shipping!

Unknown-2You can choose the “Killing of Jesus” DVD or the “Building Great Kids” DVD. Simply make your donation online at the above address, then send us an email at byhcontest@gmail.com, giving us your name, the name of the child to whom you donated (or put “general fund” if you donated there),  your postal address and which DVD you would prefer. We’ll quickly ship this to you in plenty of time for holiday giving or for your own viewing. To be eligible for the free DVD, we just ask that you make your donation of $25.00 or more and let us know via email on or before November 20th.

We hope the DVD blesses your family. We know your contributions to the children will help theirs!

Sister to Sister: Clicking Here and There

431598_497839583567223_648183403_nA few things on this Monday morning deserve your attention. First, I’ve been meaning to mention to you all the great things you can find on The Light Network. Hope you’ve already been there, but, if not, be sure to click on over soon and flip on some lights that will make yours shine a little brighter for Him. I’ve especially been impressed with something they call “Wifey Wednesday”. It’s a weekly podcast segment that focuses on all things Christian wife. You’ll like it. Be warned, though. It will challenge you and step on your toes, at times. I’m especially thankful for two recent segments featuring my close sisters, Jennifer Benavides on Ministering to Others and Hannah Giselbach on Bringing Back the Romance. So, many thanks to Wifey Wednesday host, Emily Hatfield and to all the good folks over at The Light Network.

Second, if you’re doing the Digging Deep study, it’s almost time to start our study of the Holy Spirit. May 1st is the target date. Now, we do NOT want you to begin this study on May Day and drop out by Cinco de Mayo! The book is not necessary, but it may help keep you on track.  If you’re in a group and you want the group discount for the supplementary book “The Work of the Holy Spirit in Redemption”, click on over to The Colley House  for purchasing information. This book is a GREAT resource, whether you are doing the study or not. (While you’re there, check out the books for young adults for your graduation gifts. For girls, think about “GIFTS” or the “Pure on Purpose” set. For Guys, look at “Headed to the Office” or “GUARD”.  For your kindergarten graduates, you’ll find Hannah’s Hundreds and Digger Dougs. If you are ordering five or more items, contact me on FB for a BYH readers graduation discount!)

Thirdly, I’m hoping you’re thinking of joining us for part or all of the Christian Training Series at Freed Hardeman University in mid July. It’s the best kept secret among our lectureships. Small crowds, fun fellowship (even breakfast on the president’s lawn) and relationship-building for eternity! Click over and plan to take advantage of this great (and relatively inexpensive) week. Attendees are couples and singles, young and old. Once you go, you will want to make it an annual event. I’ll see you in the dorm!

Finally, Get your teens plugged in to Tomorrow’s Church, Today. I’m pretty impressed with what these kids have put together. It’s just an encouraging resource for teens who really want to be all for Him!

Yes. ALL for Him!
