The Summer Fitness Program for the Soul – Number 6

logoFAQsofLifeThe FAQs of Life!

This is the one about which I’m most excited. That’s saying a whole lot, because I love Digging Deep, CTS, PTP and Horizons, But this event is like nothing I’ve ever been involved in before.

This year the West Huntsville ladies have transformed our bi-annual ladies seminar into a weekend of opening up the floor, the tweets, email and facebook inboxes for any Bible related question that any woman in attendance would like to hear discussed. I will be privileged (and mostly challenged) to be answering the questions, to the best of my ability. We have already had some interest in hearing tips about parenting, answers about things like clapping in worship and children’s church, and the discussion of moral issues involving divorce and remarriage. Now, I am surely far from being the Omniscient One on any of these topics, but I have the Word of the Omniscient One and I will be very prayerful as we approach the day. I will also not be hesitant to say “I don’t know,” if I don’t, and then revisit topics later via this blog.

Far outweighing any uncertainty that we have, though, is excitement. We think it’s going to be a faith-building weekend. How can it be a bad thing when we, as God’s women come together with the spiritual issues that are foremost in our minds, examine His Word for the answers and pray together for the faith and courage to implement His Will in the areas that are most challenging?

So save the date. It’s September 13-14, 2013. Come for all or part of the weekend. The schedule follows. I am particularly excited about the “Sweet Hour of Prayer: Answers for Souls” session on Friday night. We will go to God in prayer for those precious souls we are trying to reach with the gospel and we will share strategies that may help in each of our personal evangelism scenarios. I think it will be a rich time. I think we will leave better equipped to reach souls.

Then on Saturday, we will have a full day of addressing the issues that we need most. In a very real sense, those of you who attend will set the agenda. We will have liberal doses of praise and prayer and some sessions of food and fellowship, but we will be primarily all about answers from the Word.

We hope you will plan to come and spend the night in our homes. We are hoping to fill them up! So, for now, we need you to do a couple of things:

  • Register and Plan to Attend. Let us know your lodging needs. Register at https://thecolleyhouse.org/seminar.
  • Invite your friends to come with you. We would love to have your non-christian friends as well as groups of ladies from your congregation.
  • Send us your questions as you think of them. Tweet questions with the hashtag #FAQsofLife or email diggingdeepingodsword@gmail.com. (You may also ask them from the floor on the day of the seminar!)
  • Watch this blog for more details. We hope to fill our homes and our new auditorium.
  • Be there! He has all the answers you’ve been needing!

The Summer Six Fitness Program for the Soul – Number 4

5Uig2xmF76nUcTYFXxAr6g-temp-upload.arsnnzgw.175x175-75Polishing the Pulpit

By far the most comprehensive lectureship of which our family has ever been a part, Polishing the Pulpit is the single most spiritually sustaining, as well. I have literally known of marriages that would likely not have survived had it not been for the nurture gained through lessons and counseling received at PTP. I’ve known of congregations whose elders left PTP ready to go home and do the hard stuff–the stuff that builds strong churches–for the first time. I have known of teens who left PTP with a renewed zeal, believing, perhaps for the first time, that they were not alone in defending faith and morality…that there is a strong support system, even among peers, through the PTP network.

Kids, parents, homeschoolers, elders, and sisters who meet one another at PTP stay in touch via email and facebook groups through the year. Families get to know other families with whom they have much in common in the Lord and look forward to the week together, sometimes even sharing accommodations while in Sevierville or planning outings together.

And outings. There’s so much to do in the area, that you will want to come early or stay late, just so you can visit a museum, take in a show, or take a hike and take in His majestic mountain wonders.

Of course, the best part of the week is a multi-track spiritual feast. There’s a track for kids, for teens, for ladies, for elders, for members, for deacons, for preachers and for preacher’s wives. The biggest problem you will have is choosing which sessions to attend. The biggest blessing this year just may be that every paid attendee gets to bring home a flash drive containing the contents of the entire week’s audio. That’s right– every lesson by every speaker! That’s almost 700 lessons!

I’ll never forget that little hotel room in Gatlinburg where 12 ladies met together once a day when our husbands convened for what was a relatively tiny PTP lectureship several years ago now. Hannah Colley was the entire children’s program! The entire ladies program was having class with me once a day. God blessed those tiny beginnings. He blessed our families, our children, our husbands and their pulpits. He blessed Allen Webster, David Barker, Eddy Gilpin and Mark Howell, PTP directors, with vision, health and helpers. He blessed the Jacksonville Church in Jacksonville, AL with resources and workers and he has blessed all participants each year through these servants.

Now it’s simply huge! It’s huge for kids when they actually meet Digger Doug and Iguana Don. It’s huge for moms when we watch our teenagers grow in their hearts for God more in a week than they have in the past year. It’s huge for women to kick off a year of meaty Bible study in the Digging Deep sessions. It’s huge for young preachers to sit at the feet of Alan Highers and Tom Holland. It’s just without doubt, the most far-reaching event happening in America today. That’s because it’s the most comprehensive, most well-attended event in our country that reaches beyond the boundaries of time and space in its effect. It reaches eternity!

Check it out at www.polishingthepulpit.com. The 2013 schedule has just been released. I hope I’ll see you there.

The Summer Six Fitness Program for the Soul – Number 3 (and itching to tell you this…)

Christian Training Series

Okay, this is the best kept secret in the whole sisterhood right now. It has it all. Excellent classes that will jump start your spiritual fitness, fellowship in a smaller setting than most lectureships (thus having this almost magical quality that enables friendship-forging like no other place I have seen), fun activities like live country music and talent (or not so much) shows, an old-time auction with a real Tennessee auctioneer, and affordable pricing for the entire event. I am so going to be there and I get to speak about being victorious in time management! (My son, upon hearing that topic said “Now that’s the blind leading the blind!”–yep, direct quote.) I’m speaking on something else, too, but I need to go to the website and see what that other speech is about.

Speaking of the website, www.fhu.edu/CTS/index.aspx, I had a little trouble navigating, but you savvy people probably will not. (Think maroon and black box on the upper right hand side!) I’m going to try and be very specific as I tell you how to get details and register. Mrs Alice Holtin is in charge of registration and she is one accommodating person. You can reach her, if you have any problems figuring things out at aholtin@fhu.edu. She can answer any CTS question.

This year’s program is July 18th-20th. You can check in to the nice and clean shared suites or private rooms as early as the evening of the 17th. Classes and activities, which usually include a wonderful kick-off breakfast at FHU President Joe Wiley’s home will begin early on the morning of the 18th. The program will provide a busy schedule from then through the evening of the 20th (but feel free to skip a session now and then if you just can’t go on without a nap). There is also an early morning Sunday service provided for those who need to travel home on Sunday, the 21st.

Speakers this year include Billy Smith, Stan Mitchell (worth it just for the accent!), David Stofel, Celine Sparks (I hope they will let her do a humor session on the side for ladies!), and Glenn, Cindy and Caleb Colley, among others. Priced at a nominal $80 to $120.00 (depending on your choice of accommodations), it’s an affordable three-day pray-cation that you will want to experience this summer. (And you’ll only have to miss one day of work!) You can register online, or download and mail in an application. Some churches choose to cover the registration cost for participants attending from their church. Ask your elders. They may very well think it’s worth the growth. You will come home excited and plan to bring more people next year. Details for online registration are found at http://www.fhu.edu/CTS/register.aspx. If you prefer to mail in an application go to http://www.fhu.edu/CTS/index.aspx and click on brochure and application in the upper right box. You can see neat pictures of past years’ classes on these pages as well. What you don’t see is the laughter, the growth, the fun that this program has brought to so many lives. If you go, you will laugh your head off during the auction, music, meals and free times. Why? Because Sam Hester, long-time CTS director and guru is a funny, funny man! (He knows tons and tons about the Bible and Greek and the restoration movement, but he can also do some mean impersonations of Marshall Keeble, do some old movie bits about snakes and pick-up trucks, and put a whole new twist on “The Three Little Pigs!” ) Need to laugh again? I do. We will laugh! We will get closer as sisters!

Now, if you know someone who really needs to grow, why not make this your anonymous (or not) gift to a struggling sister or family? I’m sure if you contact Alice, she would be happy to notify any recipients of their paid registration to this program. Now that’s a great gift!

Speaking of struggling sisters, I just must say this morning that I am extremely blessed by a big bunch of encouraging sisters around the globe. This morning I want to send my deepest thanks to two of them, who pulled me from, as Anne of Green Gables would say “the depths of despair” last evening.

It had been a pretty rough day. Last weekend I pulled some weeds in a little flower bed in front of our cabin. One of those plants, masquerading as an innocent weed, was not innocuous. For the past few days, I have thought a lot about Job and that potsherd. I have scratched (bad thing to do), squirmed, and cried. I have used hydrocortisone, olive oil, and other medicines. Poison oak is a wicked, wicked force with which to contend. I’m trying to smock a little dress for a baby shower gift on Sunday and I can’t even stitch for oozing all over the fabric!

But last night, I tried to patch up the wounds, so my clothes would not stick and my friends would not shun me, and go to Bible study. Let’s just say that during the ladies class, as people were calmly distressing about the plight of Hosea, when he was buying Gomer back off the slave market, I almost just shouted out right there in class, “BUT DON’T YOU ALL CARE THAT I AM STICKING TO MY SEAT BACK HERE ON THE BACK ROW?? HELP!!!” I almost asked Tammy and Jessica, who were sitting on either side of me to please move over and give me some elbow room for scratching! I was a pathetic mess of a blistered strawberry.

But a couple of minutes after I got back home, there was a gentle knock on my kitchen door. And there she was: Jennifer Benavides, angel of mercy, with a sack of goods from WalMart, which included the one thing I have tried that gave me ease. (I know you are going to write and ask me, so I’ll go ahead and tell you: Zanfel.) She threw in a box of Aveeno bath. Let’s just say that, lying there in bed last night, I thought, “This is a taste of what heaven is going to feel like: rest, relief, bliss!) I think I may rejoin the living now.

Jennifer left and I looked at that stack of unopened mail on the counter. I did not want to tackle it. But there was one small package that caught my eye. “Hmmm…can’t remember ordering anything from Wetumpka, AL…” So, I opened it and found this:

photo (34)

along with a sweet, sweet note from Rebecca Richardson. The note included these very encouraging words:

“Just a little thank you for all your work with the Digging Deep study….” (then lines of encouragement, blessings, prayers…just all the stuff I needed so desperately at just that moment)… “I found the pattern for this while we were studying Matthew. One like it sits in my kitchen, right where I can see it as I make our bread, reminding me where every blessing comes from. I stitched this while listening to the Matthew podcast.”

I know what you are thinking. You are right. God is just so good. He knows at every moment what we need and He gives it to us. He gives it to us through trials and then He shows us that trials are blessings in disguise. He gives it to us through sisters who somehow find and offer just what helps most when we are discouraged. He gives it to us through studies of men like Hosea who gave so much in life in order to obey God. He gives it to us through daily bread and through a Savior who showed us Who and how to thank for it. He gives it to us through balms and salves that heal poisons. More importantly, He gives it to us through the balm of Gilead that heals the poisonous infection of sin in our lives. I praise Him for His mercies to me last night and in every dark night of this life. He.Is.Good!

The Summer Six Fitness Program for the Soul – Number 2

Horizons at FHU

I’m telling you, when your kids experience this program once, they’re hooked for all of the teen years. Both of the Colley kids went all the way through the yearly program and, having finished it, transitioned from students to teachers. Fitness regimes they encountered through the years included evangelism training, taming the tongue, rejecting worldliness, applying truths from the parables, and, for the guys, training in worship leadership.

All of this comes in a package that’s extremely appealing to teens. They stay in dorms and have free rein of the campus (with some supervision, of course), which has pretty much been transformed into a spiritually focused college, of sorts, for 12-18 year olds. They experience big (and safe) campus wide parties and programs, cafeteria eating, dorm devos, huge worship assemblies, sports, drama, choral programs, awards and, best of all, some pretty great Bible classes. (About three hours of each day are spent in these classes.) It’s a college preparatory summer camp!

What excites me most about my week on campus this July is that Hannah and I get to teach about 125 twelve and thirteen-year-olds how to take the gospel to their friends. We’re going to put them through a crash course in evangelism that will make it practical–really do-able–for them. Why are we so excited about this? Because, unlike the adult women we usually speak to about evangelism, these girls have not yet been halted by all the societal barriers that make us so afraid of teaching our friends the gospel. They’re not fully convinced their friends will think they are weird if they want to talk about Jesus and many of them leave Horizons with a determination to talk about Jesus, even if they do. It’s exhilarating for me to look into the eyes of these kids and see them light up with confidence. It is extremely fun when some of them take the time later to write to me and tell me about study sessions they’ve had, once they’ve returned home. (Some of my favorite facebook friends are former Horizons students!)

The price for the camp hovers around $200.00, a bit pricier than some of your camps in the woods, but it does include lots of amenities, like air conditioned dorms and classrooms, fun t-shirts and book-bags, snow cones and movie nights, and shows with hypnotists or carnivals with rock climbing and ultimate bouncing paraphernalia or very cool scavenger hunts. Kids are placed in small dorm groups with competent counselors, whose entire job for the week is to make sure the experience is safe, fun and, most of all, spiritually strengthening for the kids. But your boys will also interact with amazing preachers of the gospel and your girls will learn from women who can mentor them to higher planes of faith. We want your kids to love it so much that they don’t want to miss it next year. We want them to love heaven so much that they don’t want to miss it either. We want them to love the church that Jesus bought!

Why would I write about Horizons as a part of MY personal fitness program? Because, when I plan classes about evangelism for your twelve-year-old, I once again come to appreciate the simplicity of the gospel story myself. I’m challenged to put my excuses behind me and share the power of the cross with my friends, too. The cross is the reason I include Horizons in my plans each summer. I hope some of you will check it out at:

The Summer Six Fitness Program for the Soul – Number 1

It’s summertime! It’s almost officially summertime, anyway, and the unofficial Memorial Day weekend summer kick-off has already brought the grills out, taken the pool covers off and taken lots of the clothes off, too. (But that’s for another blog post!)

I’ve made some plans to try and stay healthy this summer. I’m going low on carbs and sugar and high on vegetables and fruit. That’s a big sacrifice for me. I love the all the CHs!…chocolate, cheesecake, and chips with salsa. Of course I love all the FRs, too–french fries, frappes, and Frozen yogurt and I love all the rest of the digraphs (loaded). But I am really going to try–hard!

I also plan to walk, fast, at least a couple of miles three times a week. Whenever the weather is bad and I use the treadmill, I also have a rowing machine that I hate using, but I do use it. And one of my doctors has prescribed a summer schedule of water aerobics, so I will let you know how that goes. My friend, Holly, tells me I will love it. Needless to say, the instructors are going to marvel at my “swimsuit”.

Maybe you are focusing on academic fitness for your kids. I know some kids who have a reading list for the summer to keep their skills sharp through the weeks out of school. I used to make my kids do a timed math program called “Mad Minutes” each day during the summer so they wouldn’t forget what they’d learned through the year. There was a reason they weren’t called “glad minutes”, but they did help lots with retention. (Fitness and fun are not synonyms. Have you noticed?) And even this summer, our son is immersing himself into some Medieval philosopher named Maroni for the purpose of becoming more “fit” to defend his dissertation. (Like I said about fitness and fun…)

Of course, the most important fitness is spiritual fitness. This summer I plan to do at least six spiritual core fitness programs. I hope by the end of summer to be a little stronger in my resistance to the devil (James 4:7), to have laid aside some of the weights of sin that so easily beset me (Heb.12:1), to be able to lift a little more of the burdens of others (Gal.6:2—that’s a Hannah’s Hundred verse!), and to be prepared to run the spiritual marathon that leads to the prize of the high calling (Phil. 3:14).

SO…SPIRITUAL FITNESS PROGRAM NUMBER 1:

Hannah’s Hundred

Several homeschooling moms have asked me lately about these memory CDs and which verses from scriptures they include. (I think some of these moms are planning to substitute Hannah’s Hundred for some part of a Charlotte Mason program they are using.) At any rate, the request for a verse list got me reminiscing about the days in our home when the kids were small and we were struggling to find ways to put the Word in their hearts. Hannah’s Hundred, volumes 1-4, were the result of our discovery that kids (and adults) could learn long and difficult passages or large numbers of simple verses if we could just set them to music. There are 400 verses that immediately perk our ears when we hear them quoted from the pulpit or in Bible studies. Little tunes pop into our minds when we hear them. They will forever be verses with which we are most familiar from the Word. They’re in permanent folders somewhere in the filing cabinets of our minds and when Marge (she’s the lady in our minds who runs around finding the info that we need from memory files) is called upon to locate these verses, she just starts humming and then she can easily pull up these files.

I plan to put these verses on our CD player once again this summer. I think they will get us thinking on the Word and I think that has to be good for spiritual fitness.

So here’s a sample of the Hannah’s Hundred series, if you are interested. They’re available at www.thecolleyhouse.org. And for those of you moms who have asked for a listing of the verses, scroll down for that, too!

1. John 14:15 — “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

2-14. I Corinthians 13: 1-13 — “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Love suffereth long, and is kind; Love envieth not; Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love never fails; but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
